Configure an LDAP account in Thunderbird

You can configure an LDAP account in Thunderbird to look up the shared contacts on the server.
Refer the topic import contacts into Thunderbird to save the contacts for offline use.

Go through the troubleshooting topic if you face any problem while configuring the account.



Configure an LDAP account

You can configure an LDAP account in Thunderbird to lookup the shared contacts on the server.


1. Select the Address Book tab

2. Select the menu File > New > LDAP Directory

3. On the Directory Server Properties window,

i) Select the General tab and provide account settings

Name Name of the account to indentify
Hostname Server name URL

For example, mail.mithiskyconnect.com

Base DN Enter the string dc=addressbook
Use secure connection (SSL) Keep the check-box selected
Port Number Keep the port number value 636 as it is
Bind DN Enter the string in the format given below without any space or newline in it

mail=<user id>,dc=addressbook
Example : mail=smith@mithiskyconnect.com,dc=addressbook

Using Mithi SkyConnect trial account?

Use the User Id received in the Welcome Mail
and Password provided by the Mithi team.

ii) Select the Advanced tab,

Scope Choose the Subtree option
Serach Filter Keep the value blank
Login Method Select the Simple option from the list

iii) Click OK to configure the account.

Search contacts on the server

1. Go to the menu Edit > Search Addresses

2. You need to provide the password of your account for the first time connection to the server.
Choose to save the password in the password bank for future.

3. On the Advanced Address Book Search window,
i) Search in : Choose the newly created LDAP Directory account
ii) Search Criteria: Define the serach criteria

For example, search addresses whose Display Name contains the character a

iii) Click the Search button to proceed.

All the matching addresses are listed on the screen.

This way you can only search and view the contacts on the server.

Each time while composing an email, you need to select the addressbook we have configured and search for a required contact on the server.

You can Import Contacts from server into Thunderbird local contacts to avoid searching each time.

Troubleshooting / FAQs

What is the server name and host name of my server?

SkyConnect Trial Account User

If you are evaluating the mithiskyconnect.com domain the URL or server name used for accessing any application (POP, IMAP, SMTP, LDAP, XMPP, CalDAV) is mail.mithiskyconnect.com

Hosted Users

For all hosted users

  • The host name is <domain>.mithiskyconnect.com
  • The server name is your <domain> name

In Premise Users

Please contact administrator to find out the exact URL.

Can I use IP address of the server instead of server name URL?

It is not recommended to use IP address of the server. As IP addresses are not permanent and may change in future.

So, please contact to the administrator if you do not know the URL of your server.

Unable to configure your account? Connection Error?

By default, iOS connects to the server over SSL using the default ports.
If the ports are not open for connection and blocked in the Firewall, connection error occurs and configuration fails.

So make sure, you have installed/enabled SSL certificate on your server and ports required for connection to the server are open and not blocked in the firewall.

Please contact your admin to check if there is not a port issue.

Want to connect to the server without using SSL?

Yes, you can connect to the server without using SSL if SSL is configured on it.

Refer the ports required for connection to the server without using SSL.
If the ports are not open for connection and blocked in the Firewall, connection error occurs and configuration fails. So make sure, required ports are open for connection and not blocked in the firewall.

Please contact your admin to check if there is not a port issue.

Can not find a copy of an email sent in the Sent Items folder?

For ConnectXf Users

Case 1: Your Connect Xf version is 3.28 +
Solution : Contact Admin
You need to contact admin to enable the Save Sent Items user property for you. Enabling the property automatically stores a copy of an email sent to the Sent Items folder on the server.
Case 2: Your Connect Xf version is below 3.28 and you are using POP account
Solution : Check the Sent folder
You can find all the mail sent in the Sent folder of the (Outlook/Thunderbird) you are using.
You need to upgrade your ConnectXf to the latest version to receive a copy of an email sent to the Sent Items folder automatically. After upgrade contact your admin to enable the Save Sent Items user property for you. Once this option is enabled, all the messages sent (From mobile/Desktop) sync automatically to the Sent Items folder on the server.
Case 3: Your Connect Xf version is below 3.28 and you are using IMAP account
Solution 1 : Upgrade the Connect Xf server
You need to upgrade your Connect Xf to the latest version to receive a copy of an email sent to the Sent Items folder automatically. After upgrade contact your admin to enable the Save Sent Items user property for you. Once this option is enabled, all the messages sent (From mobile/Desktop) sync automatically to the Sent Items folder on the server.
Solution 2 Customize the settings
Outlook 2013 To Customize Outlook 2013, - Select the Manage Account tab - Refer the steps mentioned in the topic  : Save a copy of mail sent to the Sent Items folder on server
Outlook 2010 To Customize Outlook 2010, - Select the Manage Account tab - Refer the steps mentioned in the topic  : Save a copy of mail sent to the Sent Items folder on server

For SkyConnect Users

Solution Contact Admin
You need to contact your admin to enable the Save Sent Items user property for you. Once this option is enabled, all the messages sent (From mobile/Desktop) sync automatically to the Sent Items folder on the server.

Is it possible to save the contacts on the server to my machine? Can I update the contacts on the server?

On configuring an LDAP account in your desktop client, you can lookup for the contacts on the server when you are connected to network. You are not allowed to update the contacts on the server.

For offline use, you can import contacts into your desktop.

Please make a note, you should keep updating the phone contacts on regular interval to have updated list of contacts as on server.
