Bounce error messages & their meanings

Bounce messages can vary in format, and in exact wording, depending on the mail server that's sending the message back to you. Different types of mail servers use different terminology.

Error Reason Solution
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at bugzilla.int.

I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<selbin@mithi.com>: 192.168.0.129 does not like recipient. Remote host said: 554 Mailaddress is administratively disabled. (#5.2.1) Giving up on 192.168.0.129.

This error could occur due to three specific reasons :
  1. Mail Address does not exist
  2. Mail account has been blacklisted.
  3. Mail policy rejection.
If this happens to mail you send, get in touch with your ISP and explain that their server may be on a blacklist somewhere, and then try to use a different email address, or a different email account of your own, to contact your intended recipient. You might also tell your recipient that their ISP is improperly blocking legitimate email.
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at bugzilla.int.

I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following adt.

http//192.168.0.129/servlet/Compose?T sender was rejected. Remote host said: 552 sorry, that message size exceeds my databytes limit (#5.3.4) Your message willl not be delivered and will bounce back if the mail size exceeds its limits.Hi. This is the qmail-send program at bugzilla.int.

This error occurs when the mail size exceeds the max limit set. This may be due to some large attachments. Resend the mail in parts with fewer attachments, or zip all the attachments to ensure that the overall mail size does not increase the max limits set. Otherwise contact administrator to increase the max size limit.
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at domain.com. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out. <recipient@domain.com>: {11.36.44.521412:SENDER=sender@domain.com:RECIPIENT=recipient@domain.com:IP=192.168.0.3}: MAILBOXLOCATION='myserver',IP='192.168.0.3' is local, skipping forward.Exit Code=0.Processing time:0.020.The users mailfolder is over the allowed quota (size). (#5.2.2) The recipients mail box size has exceed the quota and the mail policy set in block receiving. The recipient has to clear his mail box of unwanted mail to get the mail box size within limits. Or the administrator can increase the recipients quota or the mail policy can be set to block sending instead of block receive.
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mithi.com.

I tried to deliver a bounce message to this address, but the bounce bounced!

<fleck@referralvideo.com>: 64.202.166.12 does not like recipient. Remote host said: 553 sorry, relaying denied from your location [203.199.162.232] (#5.7.1) Giving up on 64.202.166.12.

The ISP might require you to authenticate before sending email and you haven't.

The "From" address might not match an account on the email server. A mail server somewhere could be misconfigured.

There's no blanket answer if "unable to relay" happens only occasionally. Double check the email address you're sending to, for starters.

Virus was found in an Email message & stop the entire message. Be careful! There's a class of viruses these days that propagate by "looking like" bounce messages. They instruct you to open an attachment for more information. Don't. Especially if you don't recall sending the message in the first place. Don't open any attachment, especially one accompanying what looks like an email bounce unless you are absolutely positively certain that it's legitimate.

The user should contact the recipient by some other means and notify him of the problem.

The mail server mentioned in the bounce message doesn't have an account for anyone with the email given. A couple of common reasons:
  1. You typed the email address wrong.
  2. It's an old email address that's no longer in use.
Perhaps the person you're attempting to email has changed their email address, and you're using an old one which is no longer valid. Make sure what you're using is up-to-date.

Unknown Email ID The single most common reason this error happens is simply that you made a typographical error in the email name. Check the entire email address for an error.

Your mail will not be delivered, because mailbox is unavailable. Check to make sure that you have the email address correct, wait a while and try again, and if it still bounces, try contacting the recipient some other way.

your recipient has too much email and their server isn't accepting any more.

you'll need to try and contact your recipient through some other email account, or some other way.

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mithi.com.

I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<petrofed@petrofed.com>: Sorry. Although I'm listed as a best-preference MX or A for that host, it isn't in my control/locals file, so I don't treat it as local. (#5.4.6)

--- Below this line is a copy of the message.

The domain to which mail was sent is misconfigured on the destination server. The sender should contact the recipients through some other means and inform them.

You may also be getting bounce messages for email you didn't send. There's another class of virus that "spoofs" or fakes the "From" address on email messages, and as a result you could be getting bounce messages that have nothing to do with you.

Finally, if every email you send bounces, then you probably have a different problem. Chances are your email client is misconfigured. Double check out outgoing or "SMTP" server settings, and double check with your ISP to ensure that you have them set correctly.

Reasons for Mail bounce

Messages are bounced from two locations:

  • Sender's mail server
  • Recipient's mail server

Reasons why the sender's mail server will bounce a message

  • The recipient domain is a domain on the same server as the sender domain but the recipient user id does not exist.
  • The quota policy agent has disabled sending for the sender as his/her quota is full.
  • The recipient's server has permanently rejected mail transaction.
  • The sender server tried delivering the mail to the recipient server more than once till the queue life of the message expired. But failed to deliver the message.
  • The mail policy on the sender's server does not allow the sender to send mail to the recipient.
  • The sender is disallowed to send mail.
  • The server has detected that the mail is looping.
  • The size of the message is greater than the allowed limit.
  • The number of recipients for the message are greater than the allowed limit.
  • The message is not in correct MIME format.
  • The message is detected as a virus.

Reasons why the recipients mail server will bounce a message

  • The sender's server is listed in a RBL.
  • The recipient does not exist on the server.
  • The recipient's quota is full.
  • The mail policy for the recipient does not allow the recipient to receive mail from the sender.
  • The size of the mail is larger than the allowed mail size on the recipient's server.
  • The number of recipients is more than the allowed number of recipients on the recipient's server.
  • The recipient's server faced some temporary problems and held the message in its message queue till the queue life time expired.
  • The message took more hops than the allowed value before reaching the recipient's mail server.
  • The recipient server detects the mail as a virus.
