Frequently getting broadcast message warning: Some queue size are exceeding threshold 'threshold value'

Symptoms

  • Frequently getting alerts/ broadcast message warning: Some queue size are exceeding threshold 'threshold value'
For example:
Warning: Some queue size are exceeding threshold 300.
  • Administrators find that postfix queue contains emails from root to root.
Figure: Example: Eails from root to root in Postfix queue

Diagnosis

Check the Postfix queue using following command

postqueue -p -c /etc/connectxfpostfix/postfix

Cause

These emails are generated by an agent which updates spam rules. As they increase in queue, and crosses the threshold value administrator gets alerts as per the agents configured.

Solution

I. Delete these mails from the queue. It is advised to take back up before deletion.

To delete mails from the postfix queue, execute the following command on the server to delete all these emails:

 [root@servername]# postqueue -p -c /etc/connectxfpostfix/postfix | grep 'root' | cut -d ' ' -f1 | sed '/^$/d' | while read line; do postsuper -d $line; done

Also, servers which do not use ConnectXf's spam engine - like MEM can disable the agent.

II. Disable messages

To disable the broadcast of these mails, you can follow the instructions below:

  • Open crontab file
vim /etc/crontab
  • Change the MAILTO parameter from root to double quotes ("") as shown in the screenshot.
