I get a 554 server permanently rejected message error while sending a mail

Symptoms

  • I get this error whether I attempt to send a mail via a desktop client or via Baya (web client)

Possible Causes

  • The mail is possibly being blocked due to a configured mail policy which disallows you from sending this type of mail (depends on the rules which were matched to determine a rejection)

Diagnosis and Resolutions

Check the policy rejection details in the logs as follows:

cat /var/log/messages |grep -i senderid |grep -i receiverid

The output will look somewhat as given below

 ["MessageID"="****"]["Subject"="****"]["Size(KB)"="**"]["AttachmentCount"="*"]["AttachmentList"="***"]["ReturnCode"="*"]["ProcessingTime"="[ProcessingTime=*]"]["ProcessedSteps"="{Mail
Policy - Block(Matched rule: <Pri: * | Level: *** | Desc: ***>)}"]["Errors"="{Error - Mail rejected by
configured mail policies.}"]

Please note that the * mentioned in the above output specify the variable strings available.

To know which mail policy rule was applied, look in the 'Matched rule: section. Get the rule id and either modify OR delete the mail policy as per your requirement.
