Case 1: Mail are not being marked as spam

Symptom

  • A lot of spam in the Inbox
  • The headers of the spam mail do not have the Spam assassin headers

Cause

  • Spam Assassin is not being called because of relay client settings on the SMTP control defining the connection

Solution

  • Get the IP from which the connection is being made
  • Remove the Relay client setting for the SMTP control defining the connection
  • Confirm that Qmail scanner and Spam Assassin is called

Case 2: Mail are not being marked as spam

Symptom

  • A lot of spam in the Inbox
  • The headers of the spam mail do not have the Spam assassin headers
  • The spam mail are from postmaster@<defaultdomain>

Cause

  • The MCS version installed does not handle null senders. Spammers use null senders

Solution

  • Upgrade to a version handling null senders or install the patch.

Case 3: Mail are not being marked as spam

Symptoms

  • A lot of spam in the Inbox
  • The domain has a catchall account

Cause

  • For catchall (parking accounts), the new system assumes that if recipient is not present, then he is on another server and auto-whitelists the sender. Causing the spam assassin check to be bypassed.

Solution

  • Catchall accounts are usually used for parking. The mail should be forwarded to the relay server for the domain where the mail will be scanned for spam.
