Problem description

Mails are stuck in the queue

Cause

The error coming in log is:Connected_to_10.10.9.35_but_connection_died

Resolution

As per the bounce message "Connected_to_10.10.9.35_but_connection_died" it is clear that the connection to remote server 10.10.9.35 is happening but it is getting dropped before the smtp transaction is getting completed. This can be due to the connectivity problems. While all the services on the server are working fine, due to the connectivity problems the mail transaction is not getting completed and the mails are remaining in the queue.

To confirm this please check the following

traceroute 10.10.9.35
ping 10.10.9.35 (test this for min. 15 min and check the packet loss)
Test upload/download of some test file
telnet 10.10.9.35 25 
After connecting check the complete mail transaction

Request you to restart firewall and check if the problem is getting resolved.

If the recipient server is a mithi server then check in /var/log/messages if there is any error coming for the specific mails as shown in above logs

Problem description

Mails are not coming

Cause

The read error coming in messages log:read error or connection closed

Resolution

As per the bounce message "read error or connection closed" error is coming. It is clear that the connection is happening but it is getting dropped before the smtp transaction is getting completed. This can be due to the connectivity problems. While all the services on the server are working fine, due to the connectivity problems the mail transaction is not getting completed. read error or connection closed error is a temporary error and most of the time the sender server resends the mail. So even if earlier there is a read error, later the mails get delivered. So the earlier error can be ignored.

Kindly confirm that the user mails are getting delivered, then the error can be ignored

Problem description

Error coming is CNAME_lookup_failed_temporarily

deferral: CNAME_lookup_failed_temporarily._(#4.4.3)/

Cause

The DNS resolution is not happening on the server. To confirm use the following command

cat /etc/resolv.conf

Check the dns resolution for every ip specified in above file

host -a yahoo.com <put ip displayed in the above output>

Resolution

  • Replace the non working dns ips with the working dns ips in resolv.conf
vi /etc/resolv.conf
  • Confirm the dns resolution
host -a yahoo.com
  • If the dns resolution is happening properly then alarm the queue
