Step 1: Installation Pre-requisites

Server hardware

The sizing of a server for evaluation is as follows:

Resource Capacity
RAM 2GB
HDD 146 GB
CPU Dual Xeon
N/W Cards 2 Gigabit ethernets
CD Rom 1


The sizing of a server for 200 users in a production environment is as follows:

Resource Capacity
RAM 2GB
HDD 2 * 146 GB in RAID 1
CPU Dual Xeon
N/W Cards 2 Gigabit ethernets
CD Rom 1
Power supply Redundant

Note: Connect XF can be installed on virtual machines of similar configuration.


Warning: You can have only Connect XF application installed on the Linux server. Connect XF installation removes any packages or components installed during the Linux installation that Connect XF does not require.

Operating System media

  • Connect XF 3.6+ can be installed on the following Linux distros: RHEL (4.8 & 6.0) and CentOS (4.8 & 6.0)
  • Versions PRIOR to Connect Xf 3.6 can be installed on the following Linux distros: RHEL 4.8 and CentOS 4.8.
  • For installation you require the Operating System media.
  • If you are following the recommended method of Operating system installation as given below, then you will need the Operating System kickstart CD.
  • If your package of Connect XF does not contain the Operating System media or kickstart, you can download and create the media as given below:

  • Note: Before installing the Operating System on the hardware, ensure that the server hardware and the Operating System are compatible. For this, you can refer to the hardware specifications provided by the hardware vendor.

Connect XF media

  • You can install Connect XF by downloading the installable components from the download center, or from the Connect XF CD.
  • Click on the link below to go to the download center.
Download center
  • The Connect XF media also distributes the open source and free software that are used during installation and post installation. A complete list of software installed and their respective copyrights is available in the credits.txt document available in the documentation folder of the installable components.

A Desktop PC

  • It is recommended that the installation is done by accessing the server via a desktop PC (using ssh access via PuTTY)
  • Note: The minimum sizing for the desktop PC are:
  • Intel/AMD/Power PC CPU 1.5GHz
  • 512MB RAM
  • The same PC can also be used to test the functionality. The requirements of the PC infrastructure differ slightly during installation and after the installation.
  • Refer to the following table for details:

During installation
  • The PC has LAN/internet access to the Server on which Connect XF is to be installed.
  • The ports that have to be open between the PC and the Server are:
  • ssh - port 22
  • http – port 80
  • https - 8443
  • Firefox browser version 3.6 or later has been installed on the PC.
  • The PC has a connection to the internet, to access the Connect XF wiki.
After the installation, to test the functionality.
  • LAN/internet access to the Server on which Connect XF is installed.
  • The ports that have to be open between the PC and the Server are:
  • ssh - port 22
  • http – port 80
  • https – 8443
  • pop – 110
  • pops - 995
  • imap - 143
  • imaps - 993
  • smtp – 25
  • A Web browser. Firefox, IE, Opera are some of the supported browsers.
  • Desktop e-mail clients such as Thunderbird, Outlook, etc.

IP addresses

Make sure that you have the following IP addresses before you start the installation:

IP Description
LAN IP to be assigned to the Connect XF Server
  • This is the IP used to connect to the Connect XF server over the LAN.
Internet IP to be assigned to the Connect XF Server
  • This IP can be NATTED or directly assigned to the server. This is the IP used to connect to the Connect XF server over the internet.
IP address of the DNS Server
  • The DNS servers that you need to configure in Connect XF. These can be the IP addresses of the in-house or the internet DNS servers.
  • Connect XF refers to these DNS servers when delivering outgoing messages and also when doing reputation checks on incoming e-mail.
